Davidson
Give Davidson one night, or a half-day from Charlotte on the 77X bus: the college campus and Main Street take 3–4 hours on foot.
Davidson is a small college town on Lake Norman, 20–30 minutes north of Charlotte by car. The draw is the walkable core: Davidson College, a short Main Street of independent shops and diners, and the lakefront. It is a half-day or one-night stop, not a base for a Charlotte trip unless you want the lake.

Get around
A car is the default: I-77 exit 30 is the main approach and NC-115 runs through downtown. The historic core and campus are walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Bikes are popular but the main roads carry heavy traffic. CATS Express 77X runs from Uptown Charlotte to Davidson on a commuter schedule — check times before you rely on it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The 77X express bus runs a commuter schedule, not all day: check the timetable before you plan a return.
- Sidewalks thin out fast outside downtown; walking along NC-115 north or south of the core is not pleasant.
- Summer afternoons are hot and humid; do the campus and Main Street walk in the morning.
- Lake Norman swimming is from private docks, marinas and a few small public beaches — check access before you drive out.
Davidson is a low-crime college town; the practical risks are traffic on the main roads, heat in summer, and alcohol-fuelled nights near campus during the school year.
