Datça
Give Datça 2–3 nights: base in the town or at Palamutbükü, hire a car for one day to reach Knidos, and skip it entirely in Jul–Aug unless you only want the sea.
Datça is the main town on the Reşadiye Peninsula, a 70 km ridge of pine and coves that separates the Aegean from the Mediterranean. The draw is the water and the quiet: the ruins of Knidos at the west tip, a string of bük coves along the south coast, and a town that package operators never reached. Two or three nights covers it; one day of that needs a car.

Get around
Muttas bus 48-16 runs hourly Marmaris–Datça (about 90 min) and local buses reach as far west as Palamutbükü. Everything beyond that — Knidos, Murdala, the north-coast coves — needs a car or a dolmuş; the D400 is well surfaced but undivided, and the coast lanes are narrow.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers
- Mosques: Covered clothing, headscarf for women, shoes in hand, quiet voice; avoid: Walking in front of people praying; visiting during Friday midday prayer
- Hospitality: Accept tea or at least a sip; bring sweets or pastries to a home; avoid: Refusing food repeatedly; showing the soles of your feet
- Politics and history: Listen; let hosts raise it; avoid: Opinions on Atatürk, the Kurdish issue, Armenia or Cyprus with people you just met
- Ramadan: Eat discreetly in conservative towns during the day; avoid: Eating, drinking or smoking in front of fasting people in small towns
- Gestures: A slight upward head nod with a tut means 'no'; avoid: The OK hand sign (can be read as rude) and a thumb between fingers
- Dress in town: Shorts are fine in Istanbul and resorts; longer clothes in the interior and east; avoid: Swimwear away from the beach
- Names: First name plus Bey (men) or Hanım (women): 'Ahmet Bey'; avoid: Using the surname alone
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances on the peninsula are bigger than they look: Datça to Knidos is 35 km of winding road, about 1 h each way.
- North-coast coves such as Balıkaşıran and Murdala sit at the end of unpaved or gravel lanes; don't take a low-clearance rental.
- Water sources and shops are scarce on the north-coast walking sections of the Carian Trail.
- Ferry and boat-trip timetables thin out sharply from October; confirm before planning around them.
- Summer heat and wildfire risk peak in Jul–Aug; check local advisories before hiking.
Datça is a low-crime resort town and the main risks are environmental: summer heat, unlit coast lanes at night, and swimming far from a lifeguard. Turkey's emergency number is 112 for everything.
