Darkhan
Дархан
One night on the Ulaanbaatar–Erdenet line: Buddha statue, Kharagiin Monastery, the market, then move on.
Darkhan is Mongolia's third-largest city, a Soviet-built industrial town on the Trans-Mongolian line, about 4 hours by bus from Ulaanbaatar and 4–7 hours by train. It is split into Old and New Darkhan about 2 km apart, with steppe and cattle running into the centre. It works as a one-night break on the way north to Erdenet, Sühbaatar or Amarbayasgalant, not as a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Entering a ger: Call 'Nokhoi khorio' from a distance, enter right foot first without knocking, move clockwise to the left (west) side; avoid: Stepping on the threshold, walking between the two pillars, turning your back to the altar
- Offered food or drink: Receive with the right hand (left hand supporting the elbow), taste a little; avoid: Refusing outright or taking with the left hand only
- Snuff bottle exchange: When a man offers his snuff bottle, take it with the right hand, open slightly, sniff and hand it back; avoid: Taking snuff if you do not want it — just smell the cap
- Feet and knocks: If you step on someone's foot, shake their hand straight away; avoid: Leaving the touch unacknowledged — it is seen as the start of a quarrel
- Fire and stove: Treat the stove as sacred; avoid: Throwing rubbish into the fire or pointing your feet at it
- Hats: Hold a hat by the crown, remove it inside; avoid: Stepping over or throwing a hat
- Guests and gifts: Bring small gifts (fruit, sweets, vodka for elders, photos of your family) to a nomad family; avoid: Handing out sweets to children on the roadside
- Leaving: Keep goodbyes short; your guide will lead them; avoid: Whistling inside a ger
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter nights drop to −30 °C in January: no walking around after dark without proper layers.
- The Black Market is huge and easy to get lost in; keep bags zipped and cash separate.
- Trains to and from Ulaanbaatar often arrive between 02:00 and 03:10: book a hotel that takes late check-in or time the bus instead.
- Buy tickets to Darkhan-1, not Darkhan-2, which sits by an industrial plant south of town.
Darkhan is a quiet, low-crime city by day. The real risks are winter cold, unlit streets after dark, and getting lost in the Black Market; keep cash split and take a shared taxi rather than walking between the two halves at night.
One and two days
No timed day plan for Darkhan yet. Suggested stay: 1 night. Build a day from the list below, mornings for the big sight.
