Dargo
Go for one night, two at most: a pub, a general store and 4WD tracks. Skip if you don't have a car — no public transport reaches it.
Dargo is a tiny High Country town of about 99 people in Central Gippsland, Victoria, reached only by sealed and dirt roads off the A1. It is a base for the Wonnangatta Drive and the surrounding alpine country, not a sightseeing town: one pub with a bistro and motel, one general store, one small museum. Most travellers come for a night between Bairnsdale and the High Country, or as a fuel-and-food stop on a 4WD route.

- Camping and bush sites around town
- Check local advice and fire restrictions before camping; no formal booking system in town.
Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
- Ask what a place is called in the local language on tours; many parks now use dual names (Uluru / Ayers Rock, K'gari / Fraser Island).
- 'How are you going?' is a greeting, not a question needing a full answer.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you cannot get in or out.
- The road north of Dargo is closed in winter — check before you drive.
- Wonnangatta Drive is rated very difficult and is not passable June–November.
- Mobile coverage is Telstra 4G only; a satellite phone is wise on remote tracks.
- Dirt roads can be closed by rain or fire danger; check VicRoads and Parks Victoria before setting out.
A quiet town with low crime. The real risks are remote dirt roads, winter closures, fire danger and thin mobile coverage: tell someone your route and carry a satellite phone on the Wonnangatta Drive.
