Dana Point
Give Dana Point 1–2 nights as a harbor-and-whale-watching base between Laguna Beach and San Clemente; skip it if you want a walkable downtown.
Dana Point is a small Orange County harbor town on the Pacific Coast Highway, halfway between Laguna Beach and San Clemente. Its draw is the marina: whale watching, sportfishing and the Ocean Institute. The Lantern District and the beaches are spread along PCH, so a car or the free summer trolley does most of the work. Most visitors pass through for a night or use it as a quieter, cheaper base for the Laguna and San Clemente coast.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- PCH traffic is heavy on summer weekends and at sunset; add time for any drive.
- Beach parking fills early on warm days; arrive before mid-morning or pay for a lot.
- Surf and rip currents at Doheny and the open beaches: swim near lifeguards.
- Coastal fog can cancel or shorten whale-watching trips; ask about the policy before you pay.
Dana Point is a low-crime, well-off coastal town; the real risks are surf and rip currents, PCH traffic, and sun exposure on the water. Standard US precautions apply after dark around bars.
