Dallas, Georgia
Dallas, GA
Skip as a base unless you have a car and a reason: Civil War ground and the Silver Comet Trail need 1 night, not 3.
Dallas is a small Paulding County town about 45 minutes west of Atlanta by car, population around 11,500. It is a family suburb with a compact Main Street, two Civil War sites nearby and a rail trail running through it. Without a car it is hard to reach and hard to move around; with one it works as a quiet, cheaper alternative to sleeping inside Atlanta. Most travellers give it one night or visit as a half-day from the city.

A car is effectively required. The town has no rail service and buses are limited; rideshare coverage is thin outside the centre, especially late. The Silver Comet Trail is the one car-free way to move, by bike or on foot.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No train or metro from Atlanta: plan a car, a rideshare or a bus, and check the last return.
- Summer heat and humidity: carry water on the trail, which has long exposed stretches.
- Rideshare can be slow to arrive after about 21:00; have a number for a local taxi.
- Pickett's Mill is a wooded site with uneven ground: wear closed shoes.
A quiet suburban town; the real risks are driving (I-20 and US-278 traffic), summer heat on the trail, and thin rideshare after dark. Violent crime is low by metro Atlanta standards.
