Daejeon
대전
Give Daejeon one night as a KTX midpoint between Seoul and the southwest, or skip it: the science sights sit far from the centre.
Daejeon is South Korea's fifth-largest city and the country's rail crossroads: KTX from Seoul takes about 50 minutes, and lines to Busan and the Jeolla region split here. It is a research city, not a sightseeing city, so most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a base for South Chungcheong. The useful sights cluster around Expo Park and Yuseong, both a subway or bus ride from the old centre.

Get around
One subway line (Line 1) links Daejeon Station, the old centre and Dunsan, but it misses most sights. Buses are extensive and slow; a traffic card gives up to three free transfers within 80 minutes. Taxis are cheap for short hops but the city is spread out, so cross-town rides add up. Cash is no longer accepted on buses.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name
- Handing things: Two hands for money, cards, gifts and drinks; avoid: Passing things with one hand to older people
- Subway: Quiet voices, bags off seats, queue at the marked lines; avoid: Priority and pink pregnancy seats, even when empty
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring fruit or a boxed gift; refuse once before accepting; avoid: Writing names in red ink — it is used for the dead
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees; bow at the main hall; avoid: Stepping on thresholds; loud talk; pointing at Buddha statues
- Numbers: Know that 4 is unlucky; buildings may show F instead of a fourth floor; avoid: Giving gifts in sets of four
- Sensitive topics: Listen; follow your host's lead; avoid: Comparing Korea with Japan or China casually; jokes about the North, the Japanese colonial era, or plastic surgery
Scams and watch-outs
- Cash is not accepted on city buses: use a traffic card or T-money.
- Unlicensed taxis wait around Dongbu bus terminal; check for a meter and the 'It's Daejeon' logo.
- Friday evening traffic gridlocks from about 17:00 until midnight; take the subway across town.
- Buses terminating at Dongbu terminal sometimes drop passengers at nearby petrol stations, not the terminal itself.
Daejeon is a low-crime city and safe at night in the centre. The real risks are traffic, unlicensed taxis at Dongbu terminal, and summer monsoon flooding on riverside paths.
