Daegu
대구
Give Daegu one full day and one night between Seoul and Busan: KTX stop, downtown base at Banwoldang, skip if your trip is under 5 nights.
Daegu is South Korea's fourth-largest city, a self-governing metropolitan area ringed by North Gyeongsang province and 38–44 minutes from Busan by KTX. It sits in a flat basin that traps heat — locals call it Daefrica — so it is a spring and autumn city. Sights are split between the downtown core (Kim Gwangseok-gil, Dongseongno, Seomun Market) and the mountains east of town (Palgongsan, Gatbawi). Most travellers use it as a one-night rail stop or a day trip from Busan, not a multi-day base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A slight bow with a 'annyeonghaseyo'; handshake with the right hand, left hand touching the right forearm; avoid: Hugs and cheek kisses with people you have just met
- Age and rank: Expect to be asked your age; it sets how people speak to you. Let the eldest sit and start first; avoid: Calling older people by their given name
- Handing things: Two hands for money, cards, gifts and drinks; avoid: Passing things with one hand to older people
- Subway: Quiet voices, bags off seats, queue at the marked lines; avoid: Priority and pink pregnancy seats, even when empty
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring fruit or a boxed gift; refuse once before accepting; avoid: Writing names in red ink — it is used for the dead
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees; bow at the main hall; avoid: Stepping on thresholds; loud talk; pointing at Buddha statues
- Numbers: Know that 4 is unlucky; buildings may show F instead of a fourth floor; avoid: Giving gifts in sets of four
- Sensitive topics: Listen; follow your host's lead; avoid: Comparing Korea with Japan or China casually; jokes about the North, the Japanese colonial era, or plastic surgery
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat is the real hazard: the basin traps humid air and August highs pass 31 °C. Carry water, plan indoor stops midday.
- Late July–August is the monsoon: July and August each average over 220 mm of rain.
- Taxis: give a landmark, not an address — Daegu drivers navigate by buildings, not street numbers.
- Palgongsan and Gatbawi are a half-day each with a hike; the last buses back to town fill up on weekends.
- Subway ticket machines marked for complimentary tickets are for Korean ID holders only — buy a single-ride token or a T-money card.
Very safe by any standard: violent crime against visitors is rare and the city is calm at night. Real risks are summer heat, mountain trails at Palgongsan, and traffic — watch for scooters on pavements and cross with the lights.
