Częstochowa
Go for one night, or a half-day stop between Kraków and Katowice: Jasna Góra takes 2–3 h, the rest of the city takes another half-day.
Częstochowa is Poland's main Catholic pilgrimage city, built around the Jasna Góra monastery and its Black Madonna icon. The old centre is small and walkable along one east–west avenue, so a single night covers the monastery, the museums and the match factory. Crowds spike on Marian feast days and through the August walking pilgrimage, when beds and trains fill.

Get around
Walk: the centre is small and the sights line up east–west along Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny, with Jasna Góra at the west end. Buses and three tram lines mostly run north–south and only help for outlying sights. Ticket machines have no English menu and the payment step is easy to miss — ask a local, or take a Bolt, which costs roughly twice a city bus fare inside the centre and to Stradom station.

- Ignore people near the monastery selling items "for restoration" or for children's charities; the money does not go there.
- The City Hall museum site was flooded and is closed until further notice: check before you go.
- Pilgrimage days in August fill hotels and trains; book ahead or avoid.
- Some museum sites share one timetable and some open only on set weekends: check each site's hours.
Częstochowa is a normal, safe Polish city; the practical risks are ticket-machine fines on trams and buses, pickpockets in pilgrimage crowds, and unlicensed sellers near the monastery.
