Cyprus is not a cheap island, but the daily number is set by three choices: where you sleep, how you eat, and whether you hire a car. Beds are the biggest lever. A hostel dorm or a plain studio in Larnaca, Nicosia or the back streets of Paphos runs €25–40 a night for one person in the low season, and the same room can double in July and August or over Easter. Booking a week or more in one base cuts both the nightly rate and the transport bill.
Food is easy to keep low. Bakeries sell filled pittas and pastries for a few euros, and a souvlaki or sheftalia pitta is €5–8. A full meze for one in a tavern is €20–30, so it is a dinner splurge rather than a daily habit. Supermarkets, market stalls and kiosks cover breakfast and picnic lunches. Coffee is a small cost: a frappé or Cyprus coffee is €2.50–4.50, and a Keo beer in a bar is €4–6.
Transport decides whether the trip stays cheap. Intercity buses cost €4–7 a trip and link the main towns, so a bus-based route between Larnaca, Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos is workable if you accept slower days and fewer hill villages. A hire car is €35–60 a day in summer plus fuel at about €1.50 a litre, which only pays off when two or more travellers share it. There are no domestic flights, so the car or the bus is the real choice.
Sights are rarely the problem. Many beaches, trails and old towns cost nothing, and museum tickets are modest. The Cyprus Museum in Nicosia is about €8. The Troodos monasteries, Venetian walls and coastal paths are free to walk.
The north is cheaper for food and rooms and is priced in Turkish lira, though euros are often taken. Crossing the Green Line has its own rules, so read them before you plan a cheap northern base.
