First, decide what you want from the trip. Beach and swimming: aim for May to early November, with September and October giving the warmest sea and thinner crowds. Walking and villages: March to May, when the hills are green and wildflowers are out, or late September to November. City and culture: Nicosia and the painted churches work year-round, and winter is the quiet, cheap window.
Second, check the calendar. Orthodox Easter usually falls in April or early May and is the busiest week of spring; book rooms and cars early. Green Monday and Limassol carnival fill hotels in February or March. 15 August is the peak of the domestic holiday season. 1 and 28 October are public holidays, so long weekends get busy.
Third, pick a base that matches the heat. In July and August, stay on the coast or in the Troodos and do indoor sights in the afternoon; Nicosia and the Mesaoria plain are the hottest part of the island. In winter, the coast is mild but many beach hotels close, so Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos town are safer bets.
Fourth, book transport. Flights into Larnaca and Paphos rise sharply in July, August and around Easter; shoulder-season fares are lower. A car is the practical way to reach the Troodos and the Akamas, and rental prices track demand.
Fifth, plan around the weather rather than fighting it. Walk before 10:00 in summer, keep a rain layer in winter, and check snow conditions before driving up to Olympos.
Notes
The island has several climates in a short drive: mild coast, hot plain, cool mountains. A July trip can be a beach holiday and a mountain escape at once.
Summer brings heatwaves and wildfire risk, especially inland; follow local advisories. Winter rain is concentrated in December to February, and snow on Olympos is possible in January and February, with a small ski area — check before driving up.
The north of the island follows the same Mediterranean rhythm; read the Green Line rules before you cross. Prices, crowds and opening dates for resorts can shift, so treat all bands here as 2026 estimates and confirm before booking.
