Cyangugu

Use Cyangugu as a stopover for Nyungwe National Park or the DRC border: one night is enough unless you add a Lake Kivu boat trip.

Cyangugu sits at the southern tip of Lake Kivu, right on the border with Bukavu (DRC). Most travellers use it as a transit point to or from Nyungwe National Park (54 km east) or across the border. The lakeside is pleasant for a short stay, with a few guesthouses and a relaxed pace.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Border crossing to Bukavu (DRC) can be slow; check visa requirements for DRC in advance.
  • Road to Nyungwe is 54 km, not 20 km as some signs suggest.
  • Last buses to Kigali leave by late afternoon; confirm the schedule.

Cyangugu is generally safe, but take care near the DRC border and avoid walking alone after dark. Motorbike taxis are common; agree the fare first.
