Cumbernauld

Cumbernauld is a 1960s New Town 13 miles northeast of Glasgow, built around a concrete town centre that is due for demolition in 2027–28. The town itself gives a traveller little; what works is its position on the M80 and rail lines between Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh, and the countryside along the Forth and Clyde Canal and in the Campsie Fells just north.

Get around
The town is spread over hills with few pedestrian crossings and many underpasses, so walking between areas is slow. Buses circle the centre and suburbs; trains from Cumbernauld and Greenfaulds stations reach Glasgow in about 30 min and Edinburgh in about 50 min. A car or bike is the only practical way to reach the canal and the Campsie Fells.

- Cumbernauld has no bus station: buses stop on Central Way under the Antonine Shopping Centre, exposed to wind and rain.
- Some footpaths around Fannyside Loch are in poor condition; wear boots and turn back if it is boggy.
Cumbernauld is an ordinary commuter town and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real issues are dark, poorly lit underpasses at night, exposed bus stops in bad weather, and long unlit walks if you miss the last bus.
