Cumaná

Cumaná is the capital of Sucre state and one of the oldest European-founded settlements in mainland South America, sitting on an inlet across from the Araya Peninsula. The colonial core is small and walkable; the reason most travellers come is Mochima National Park and the beaches east of town. Infrastructure is thin, so plan around daylight and cash.

Get around
The centre is walkable. For the beach strip and the airport, use taxis or the local bus; agree the fare before you get in. Ferries run from the Cumaná docks to Punta de Piedras on the Araya Peninsula (check times and vessel condition on the day). Boats to Mochima leave from the waterfront and from nearby coastal villages.
