Cullera

Cullera is a Valencian coastal town of about 22,000 people at the mouth of the Júcar river, 40 km south of Valencia. It pairs 15 km of sandy beaches with a restored Moorish castle on the hill above town, and it works either as a cheap beach base or as a half-day trip from Valencia. Most travellers need one full day, two if they want beach time.

- The climb to the castle is a steep zigzag footpath with 14 stations of the cross: no shade, wear grip, go early.
- Beach lifeguards, foot-washing stations and disabled access run in July and August only; Platja de l'Escullera has no disabled access.
- Some beach bars and seasonal restaurants close outside summer: check before you walk out to the far beaches.
- The C1 train runs about hourly; the last train back to Valencia is early enough to matter for a day trip.
A calm, low-crime beach town; the real risks are the unshaded castle climb, strong currents on exposed beaches, and pickpockets on the packed summer seafront. 112 covers everything.
