Cuba, Missouri
Cuba
Stop for 2–3 hours on a Route 66 drive: the 12 murals, the 1908 calaboose jail and a BBQ lunch. Sleep one night only if you are breaking the Springfield–St. Louis run.
Cuba is a small Route 66 town of about 3,400 people on Interstate 44, roughly halfway between Springfield and St. Louis. It is a half-day stop, not a base: the draw is the Viva Cuba mural project, a one-room 1908 jail, the historic Uptown district and the Wagon Wheel Motel, the oldest continuously operating motel on Route 66. Most travellers see it in two to three hours; one night covers it comfortably.

Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between towns here are long: fill the tank before leaving I-44.
- Summer heat and humidity are real; carry water if you walk the mural route.
- Some Route 66 roadside businesses keep short or seasonal hours: check before you detour.
- Tornado season runs roughly Mar–Jun in this part of Missouri; watch local alerts.
Cuba is a small, low-crime town and safe for a daytime stop; the real risks are highway driving, summer heat and long empty stretches between services. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at roadside stops.
