Cuautla
Go for one night if you are already in Morelos: the Zapata sites and the 16th-century churches are a half-day, not a destination on their own.
Cuautla is a working city of about 157,000 people in Morelos, an hour and a half by bus from Mexico City's Taxqueña terminal. It matters for two things: the Mexican Revolution (Emiliano Zapata was born nearby at Anenecuilco and is buried here) and a cluster of 16th-century monastery churches on the UNESCO-listed route of early evangelisation convents. Sights sit in the centre and are walkable; the water park and the hacienda ruin need a taxi. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Cuernavaca or a single night on the way to Zacualpan de Amilpas.

Get around
The centre is walkable: the parroquia, the ex-convento, the railway museum and the Casa Morelos museum are all within about 15 minutes on foot. For Anenecuilco, the hacienda ruin and Agua Hedionda, take a taxi or a local combi; taxis are cheap and metered by zone, so agree the fare first. Buses from Mexico City arrive at separate company waiting rooms a few blocks apart, not one terminal.
