Cuamba

Use Cuamba as a transit stop between Nampula and Malawi: one night is enough. It is not a base for Lichinga or the Niassa highlands.

Cuamba is a rail and road junction in northern Mozambique, used mainly as a stopover on the way to or from Malawi. The town has a daily train from Nampula, a growing market and a few simple eateries. Most travellers stay one night before continuing to Mandimba, Lichinga or back to Nampula.

Scams and watch-outs

  • The airport has no scheduled flights; use Nampula or Lichinga.
  • Minibuses to Mandimba start collecting passengers around 4 AM and leave when full; this can take hours.
  • The train from Nampula takes 10–12 hours; bring food and water (there is a restaurant car, but supplies may be limited).

Check local safety conditions; petty theft can occur in markets and on public transport. The road to Mandimba is unpaved in parts and may be impassable after heavy rain.
