Skip as a base unless you are crossing to Romania or tracing the Szatmár border villages: one half-day on foot covers the centre, then move on.
Csenger is a small border town in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, first recorded in 1219 and made a town in 1989. The centre is a compact square with a 13th-century Reformed church, a free local history museum and a handful of shops and food bars. There is no local bus or taxi, so you walk the town and use regional buses for the villages around it. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from Romania, or use it as a slow half-day between Mátészalka and the border.

Get around
