Crystal River is a small Gulf-coast town built around Kings Bay and its springs, the main winter refuge for West Indian manatees on Florida's west coast. It is a two-night stop, not a resort base: you come for the water, the boardwalks and the seafood, and you drive everywhere else. Winter is the reason to book; summer is hot, wet and quiet.

Get around
There is no useful public transport: drive or take a rideshare. US-19 runs through town, and the Suncoast Parkway links south toward Tampa. Kayaks, paddleboards and boats launch from Hunter Springs Park and the commercial marinas; a car is needed for the refuges and Ozello.
