Crowden-in-Longdendale
Crowden
Go only if you are walking the Pennine Way or the Longdendale Trail: one night, no pub, no station, no bus. Otherwise skip and base in Glossop or Edale.
Crowden is a tiny hamlet in the Longdendale valley on the A628 Woodhead Pass between Manchester and Sheffield. It exists for walkers: the traditional first-night stop on the northbound Pennine Way, 16 miles from Edale over Kinder Scout and Bleaklow. There is no public transport, no pub and no shop beyond the campsite. Come for the moorland walking and one quiet night, not for a holiday base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No pub, no restaurant, no bus: bring food or eat in Tintwistle, Glossop or Hadfield.
- Woodhead Pass and Holme Moss often close in snow and ice; check before driving in winter.
- Moorland weather changes fast: waterproofs, map and compass, and tell someone your route.
- Phone signal is patchy on the moors even where the village has 4G.
Very low crime; the real risks are weather, boggy ground and getting lost on the moors. Carry a map, waterproofs and a charged phone, and tell someone your route before you set off.
