Cromwell
Half a day to one night: stop for the gorge, lake and a wine tasting on the way between Queenstown and Wanaka or the Lindis Pass.
Cromwell sits at the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers, a former gold-rush town that now anchors Central Otago's wine region. The main draw is the Lake Dunstan waterfront, the historic precinct and the nearby Cromwell Gorge. Most travellers use it as a lunch or coffee stop on the Queenstown–Wanaka road; one night is enough to explore the vineyards and the lake.
