Cromford
Stay one night in Cromford only if you want the Derwent Valley mills and canal on foot; otherwise base in Matlock or Wirksworth and come for a half-day.
Cromford is a small Derbyshire village in the Derwent valley, 25 km north of Derby, with about 1,400 residents. It matters because Richard Arkwright built the first water-powered cotton spinning mill here in 1771, and the valley from Masson Mill to Derby's Silk Mill is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village is compact and walkable, but the station sits about 1.2 km from the centre, so you need to plan the walk or a taxi. Most travellers see Cromford as a stop on the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock, or as a base for the High Peak Trail and the Peak District.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The station is outside the village: allow 15–20 min on foot each way, and check the last train back if you are staying in Matlock.
- Some mill buildings are still being restored and opening hours change by season: check before you travel.
- The A6 through the village is a busy trunk road with narrow pavements in places.
- Mobile coverage is 4G only in this area; 5G has not reached the valley.
A quiet village and one of the safer places in Derbyshire. The real risks are the busy A6 with narrow pavements, uneven canal-side paths, and getting caught out by the last train if you are staying in Matlock.
