Useful apps for Croatia: transport, maps, translation

Croatia runs on a small set of apps, and most of them are the same ones you already use at home. The gap is ferries and road conditions: those two are local and worth installing before you arrive.

Start with maps. Google Maps covers Croatian roads, bus stations and ferry ports well, and it handles walking routes in old towns such as Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik. Download the areas you need for offline use, because coverage is good along the coast and on most islands but has gaps in the Lika mountains and some island interiors. Maps.me is a reasonable offline backup.

For ferries, Jadrolinija is the state operator and the app carries timetables and ticket sales for the main island routes. Catamaran and ferry schedules thin out in winter, so check the date you actually travel, not a summer timetable. In July and August, book island crossings a few days ahead. Local catamaran operators run some routes too; buy at the port or through their own sites.

For intercity buses, Arriva and FlixBus both sell tickets in the app and cover the main coastal and inland lines. Buses are the workhorse of Croatian travel, and summer services between Split, Zadar, Makarska and Dubrovnik sell out. Booking a day or two ahead is cheap insurance.

For city rides, Uber and Bolt operate in Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik and other larger cities. Outside those, use a local taxi rank or ask your host to call one. Fares are metered; agree a price for airport runs if the meter is not used.

HAK, the Croatian automobile club, publishes road conditions and wind closures. The bura, a cold northerly wind, can shut the A1 motorway and coastal bridges to high-sided vehicles and sometimes to all traffic. If you are driving in winter or on a windy day, check HAK before you set off.

Add a translation app. Croatian is the local language and English is widely spoken in tourism, but a phrasebook screen helps in small towns, markets and with older hosts. Your bank's app matters too: card approvals and travel notices prevent a declined payment at a toll booth or ferry desk.

Download offline maps and ferry timetables before island hops; signal drops in the Lika mountains and some island interiors.

Check the Jadrolinija date carefully in shoulder season: winter timetables run far fewer crossings than summer ones.

If you drive, check HAK on windy days. The bura closes the A1 and coastal bridges with little warning.

Keep your bank's app handy. A travel notice or in-app approval avoids a declined card at a toll or ferry desk.
