Crisfield
Go for one night as a working-waterfront stop and a Smith Island ferry base; skip it as a beach resort — Janes Island needs a boat.
Crisfield is Maryland's southernmost town, a working crab and oyster port on the Chesapeake Bay with about 2,700 residents. It is not polished: expect a gritty harbour, a small heritage museum, and the state's biggest marina. Most travellers use it for one night, a seafood meal, and a ferry to Smith Island.
