Cranbrook is the commercial hub of the East Kootenays, about 20,000 people, sitting where Highway 3 meets Highway 95. It is a practical stop between Calgary and the Kootenay lakes, with a rail museum, a heritage town 17 km north and Kimberley 30 km away. Most travellers pass through in a day or use it as a bed base for two or three nights.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights are spread along the strip and out of town, and side streets are rough in places. Cranbrook Transit runs seven routes aimed at residents, not visitors. Two buses a day Mon–Fri link Kimberley and Cranbrook (about 45 min, $3, exact change only). Taxis: Key City Cabs and Star Taxi. Much of town is flat, so biking works for the centre.
