Cramlington
Skip as a base unless you need a cheap bed near Newcastle: one half-day for the sculptures, or a 10-min train stop between Newcastle and Morpeth.
Cramlington is a commuter town of about 29,000, six miles north of Newcastle, built up as a New Town from the 1960s after its coal mines closed. Its one draw is a set of offbeat open-air sculptures in the fields east and south of town. Trains from Newcastle take about 10 minutes, so it works as a short break in a journey up the A1 or as a cheaper bed for Newcastle.
