Cowan
Give Cowan 2–3 hours on a Highway 41 drive between Nashville and Chattanooga: depot museum, a short walk on Cumberland St, lunch. Sleep in Sewanee or Monteagle.
Cowan is a town of about 1,700 people at the foot of the Cumberland Plateau, built around the junction of Highway 41 and the CSX line. Its draw is a compact, largely unchanged downtown, a volunteer-run railroad museum in the old depot, and antique shops — a half-day stop, not a base. A car is the only realistic way in or out.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The railroad museum is staffed by volunteers and keeps irregular hours: call ahead before driving out.
- Food and shop hours are short and often Tuesday–Saturday only; Sunday and Monday options are thin.
- In-town fuel choices are limited: check for a station in Cowan before you rely on one, and fill up in Winchester or Monteagle if unsure.
- Summer afternoons are hot and humid; do the walking before noon.
Cowan is a quiet small town and street crime is not the concern; the real risks are long, unlit rural roads at night, deer on the highway and summer heat on the walking routes.
