Offaly is lowland midlands: bogs, the Shannon's western edge and one first-rank monastic site. Tullamore has the trains, the distillery and the hotels; Birr has the castle, the telescope and the Georgian square. Two nights covers both plus Clonmacnoise. A car turns the bogs, the callows and the Slieve Bloom foothills into a day; without one you are on the Tullamore–Clara rail line and a thin bus network.
