Monaghan is a small, lowland border county of drumlin hills, lakes and market towns, with no railway and no coastline. It works as a one- or two-night stop between Dublin and the north (Armagh, Fermanagh, Donegal) or as a quiet base for GAA, coarse fishing and country-house stays. Come with a car if you want the outlying sights; the towns themselves are walkable.
