Kildare is flat, horse-rearing commuter country west of Dublin, crossed by two old corridors: the M4/rail line through Maynooth and the M7/rail line through Naas, Newbridge and Kildare town. Public transport is good along those two lines and thin everywhere else, so the county works best as a one- or two-night base with a car, or as a half-day stop on the Dublin-to-the-west run. The draws are the Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens, Castletown House, the Curragh and Punchestown racecourses, canal boating on the Grand and Royal Canals, and a spread of tumbledown castles.
