Cavan is a lakeland county of drumlins, small towns and waterways rather than headline sights. It works as a 2-night stop between Dublin and Donegal, or as a quiet base for boating, angling and walking. Without a car you are limited to Cavan Town, Virginia and Belturbet, which sit on the Dublin–Donegal bus corridor.

Cavan has no railway station. Every arrival is by bus or car, and buses outside the Cavan Town–Virginia–Belturbet corridor run once or twice a day at best.
Drumlin roads are narrow, hedged and often single-track with passing places; add time for any cross-county drive.
Many B&Bs switched to self-catering after 2020, so book beds early for summer weekends.
