Coulee City
Stop for 2–3 hours on a US-2 road trip between Wenatchee and Spokane: see Dry Falls, walk the Lake Lenore Caves trail, then drive on. Not a base.
Coulee City is a tiny town (pop. 562) on Banks Lake in the Grand Coulee, a dry canyon carved by Ice Age floods. The reason to stop is the landscape: Dry Falls, a 400-foot cliff that once carried more water than all rivers on Earth combined, and the Lake Lenore Caves, eroded into volcanic rock. Both are a short drive from town. Most travellers spend 2–3 hours here on the way between Wenatchee and Spokane.
