Cotonou

Cotonou is a morning-and-evening city: the market at first light, air conditioning at midday, and dinner in Haie Vive — always by car, and with cash in your pocket.

Cotonou is Benin's economic capital, spread flat along the coast and a lagoon. Distances are short but traffic, heat and motorbike taxis make walking between districts a poor idea. The trips that go wrong run out of cash, take a motorbike without a helmet, or swim off the surf beach. Four clusters cover a first visit; Porto-Novo and Ganvié are trips from one kept bed.

COO to Haie Vive: one pre-booked hotel car, 10–40 minutes across the city — the risk is not the ride but an arrival with no cash and no confirmed door.

Car between clusters; walk only inside a cluster and only in daylight.

No pass. Agree the fare or use an app car; short rides in town are cheap.
Late at night
No fixed late-night limit; taxi supply drops after dark and in heavy rain, so use a hotel car.

Language

French is the language of government, schools and signs; Fon dominates the south, Yoruba the east and Bariba and Dendi the north. English is limited, so a translation app with offline French helps.

  • Fon: 'A fon ganji a?' (good morning, did you wake well?), 'Awanu' (thank you) — check spelling locally.
  • 'Yovo' means white foreigner; children chant it in a friendly way.

  • Vodun sites: Follow your guide, remove shoes where told; avoid: Photos without permission

  • Dress: Modest clothes in villages and shrines; avoid: Beachwear in town

  • Ask before photographing people, shrines or ceremonies.
  • Greet before you ask or buy; skipping the greeting is rude.

  • Ganvié boat overcharging: Buy at the official ticket office; agree what the trip includes.
  • Unofficial 'guides' at shrines: Use guides from the site office or your hotel.
  • 'Donations' for ceremonies: Give only what your guide says is customary.
  • Border touts and money changers: Walk to the official posts; change only small amounts.
