Cotia
Skip Cotia as a base: it is a São Paulo dormitory suburb 30 km west, worth a half-day only for the Zu Lai Buddhist temple.
Cotia is a municipality of about 150,000 people on the Raposo Tavares highway (SP-270), 30 km west of São Paulo. It has no historic centre worth a trip and no hotel cluster aimed at visitors. The one draw that justifies the drive is Templo Budista Zu Lai, one of the largest Buddhist temples in Latin America, plus a handful of family farms and orchid nurseries in the Caucaia do Alto district. Treat it as a half-day from São Paulo, not a destination.

Get around
Raposo Tavares (SP-270) is the spine of the municipality and is congested at rush hour. The centre is walkable; Granja Viana and Caucaia do Alto are not, and buses between them are limited and mostly interurban, so fares are higher. A car or a rideshare is the practical way to reach the temple, the farms and the orchid nurseries.
See and do
Known for
- Templo Budista Zu Lai
- Granja Viana shopping and restaurants
- Caucaia do Alto farms and orchid nurseries
- Atlantic Forest at Reserva do Morro Grande
Day trips

|---|---|---|
| São Paulo | Interurban bus from Pinheiros, or drive Raposo Tavares east | 1–2 h |
| Barueri | Drive via the Rodoanel and Castello Branco | About 1 h |
| Osasco | Drive east on Raposo Tavares, or bus to Osasco terminal | 45 min–1.5 h |
Sleep
- Granja Viana
- Closest district to São Paulo, with the most restaurants and malls; a few business hotels on and near Raposo Tavares. Best if you must stay in Cotia.
- Centro (Cotia)
- Around the Igreja Matriz and the bus terminal; simple, cheap hotels, little for visitors.
- Caucaia do Alto
- Rural, spread out, farm stays and inns; you need a car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Raposo Tavares jams badly on weekday mornings and evenings; build in an extra hour.
- Distances between the districts are long and buses are sparse: do not plan on walking between Granja Viana, Centro and Caucaia do Alto.
- Some listed farms, orchid nurseries and restaurants open weekends only, or have closed since they were listed: call or check before you go.
- Do not leave bags visible in a parked car.
Cotia is a working suburb, not a tourist zone. Petty theft happens around bus terminals and in traffic; keep phones out of sight, avoid walking unlit roads at night, and drive rather than walk between districts after dark.
