Choosing your places, step by step
Start with Abidjan. It is the arrival airport, the biggest concentration of hotels and restaurants, and the easiest place to recover from a long flight. Three or four nights covers Plateau, Cocody, Treichville market and the lagoon, with time for a maquis dinner.
Add Grand-Bassam as a day trip or one or two nights. It is about 40 km east of Abidjan on a good road, and the UNESCO-listed colonial quarter plus the beach makes it the single easiest second stop. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.
If you have a week, continue to Assinie, roughly 80 km east of Abidjan, where resorts sit between the lagoon and the ocean. Two nights is enough for beach time and a boat on the lagoon.
With 10 days, go inland: Yamoussoukro for one night (the basilica and the presidential crocodiles), then Man for two or three nights for the mountains, waterfalls and liana bridges near Danané. Drive it with a hired driver, or fly one leg if flights are running (check).
With two weeks, add Taï National Park for chimpanzees and rainforest, or Sassandra for wild beaches and the fishing port. Both need a car and driver and more planning than the coast.
Treat Korhogo and the far north as a separate decision. Sénoufo crafts and painted cloth are the draw, but check current travel advice before you commit, and fly rather than drive the long northern road if you go.

Notes before you book
Keep road legs in daylight. Long-distance driving after dark is the main avoidable risk on Ivorian roads, and a hired car with a local driver is the standard way to cover the interior.
The coast and Abidjan work year-round, but December to March is the driest and most comfortable window. The west and north are best from November to February. Rain peaks roughly June to July on the coast.
Book Abidjan accommodation ahead if you are travelling over New Year or a major festival. Grand-Bassam fills up at weekends and during the Abissa festival.
Carry cash. Cards work in Abidjan hotels and larger restaurants, but smaller towns, markets and drivers often expect XOF in hand.
Buy travel insurance that covers medical evacuation before you leave; the coast is fine, but the interior is far from major hospitals.
