Sort your phone before you land, not at the airport. Costa Rica runs on WhatsApp for anything that needs confirming: shuttle pickups, hotel check-in times, tour meeting points, rental-car handovers. If you do not already use it, install it and set up your number before departure, because operators will message you the day before.
For driving, Waze is the app locals and rental companies point you to. It handles the country's informal road network, one-way streets in San José and the many unpaved routes better than the alternatives. Google Maps is fine for towns and main highways, but treat its rural estimates as optimistic (check) and download offline maps of your route before leaving Wi-Fi as a backup.
Ride-hailing is limited. Uber operates in the San José metropolitan area and is the easy option there (check); outside the Central Valley, expect to use official taxis, hotel-arranged transfers or shared shuttles (check). Shuttles between tourist hubs are booked by WhatsApp or a booking site and run US$55–80 a leg (2026 estimate), so confirm the day before and keep the chat open.
National park entry is managed through the official SINAC online service. Popular parks such as Manuel Antonio can cap daily visitors in high season, so buy your ticket online in advance and screenshot it — signal at the gate can be poor (check). For money, cards and contactless work almost everywhere; SINPE Móvil is the local person-to-person transfer app and is not something a visitor needs, but it explains why small vendors may ask for a transfer instead of cash.
Translation is rarely needed in tourist areas, but a Spanish offline pack helps in sodas and at rural bus stops. Carry a power bank: long drives, park days and spotty charging make a dead phone the most likely app failure of the trip.
