Cortland
Give Cortland one night, or a half-day stop off I-81: the 1890 House and a Main Street meal. Skiers use it as a Greek Peak base in winter.
Cortland is a small college city in Central New York, about 30 minutes south of Syracuse on Interstate 81. It is not a destination in itself: the draw is one good Victorian house museum, a walkable Main Street, and Greek Peak ski resort 20 minutes east. Most travellers pass through between Syracuse and Binghamton, or sleep here to ski.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights and the ski hill sit outside the walkable centre. Downtown Cortland is compact enough to walk between Main Street, the 1890 House and campus. No useful local bus for visitors; taxis and rideshare exist but are thin late at night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter driving: lake-effect snow and ice on I-81 and Route 13; check conditions before setting out.
- Small-town hours: many restaurants close early and some shut on Sundays or Mondays — check before you drive in.
- Rideshare and taxi supply is limited after about 22:00; plan your ride back.
- Ski weekends at Greek Peak sell out lodging nearby; book ahead in January and February.
Cortland is a small city and generally calm; the real risks are winter driving on I-81 and Route 13, thin late-night rideshare, and unlit rural roads after dark.
