Corowa
Give Corowa one night, two at most: a Murray River stop between Albury and Rutherglen, best Oct–Apr, with the Federation story and the wineries as the reason to pause.
Corowa is a small Murray River border town of about 5,500 people, 30 minutes off the Hume Highway on the B58. Its pull is history — the 1890s Federation conferences that helped push Australia toward a constitution — plus river fishing and swimming at Lake Mulwala, and the Rutherglen wine district next door. Sights fit a half day; the wineries and the river fill the rest.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the town is small but the wineries, the river and Rutherglen are spread out and there is no town bus network. The Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail runs from Corowa toward Rutherglen for bikes and walkers. Coaches link to Albury for trains to Sydney and to Wangaratta for trains to Melbourne.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: plan river and winery time for early morning or late afternoon, carry water.
- Border rules differ between NSW and Victoria — fire bans, fishing licences and some trading hours change as you cross the river.
- Rural roads at dusk and dawn carry kangaroos and wombats; avoid driving then if you can.
- Many cellar doors close by late afternoon and some shut midweek: check ahead before you drive out.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are summer heat, wildlife on rural roads at dusk and the river itself — currents and cold water surprise strong swimmers.
