Córdoba

One night, two if you add Medina Azahara: the Mezquita is a 2-hour visit and the old city is walkable in half a day.

Córdoba is the Andalusian stop between Madrid and Seville: a Roman, Muslim and Christian city whose old town wraps around the Mezquita, a 786 mosque with a cathedral built into its centre. High-speed trains from Madrid take about 1 h 45 min (check), so it works as one night on the Madrid–Seville line or as a day trip from Seville. The historic quarter is small and flat; almost everything you came for is inside a 20-minute walk.

Get around

Walk. The old city is compact and mostly flat, and the Mezquita, Roman Bridge, Alcázar and Jewish Quarter sit within about 15 minutes of each other. City buses cover the station and outer districts. A rechargeable green travel card sold in tobacco shops (about €1.50, then top up) covers city and regional buses and regional trains; the city bus operator's own card works on city buses only. Check current validity and fares before you rely on either. Taxis are metered and short hops in the centre are cheap.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Summer afternoons in Jul–Aug regularly pass 40 °C: do the Mezquita at opening, then stay indoors until evening.
  • The Mezquita is an active cathedral: Mass times and Sunday hours restrict tourist entry — check the official site the day before.
  • Old-city lanes are uneven stone with no shade; wear shoes with grip and carry water.
  • Restaurants on the streets immediately around the Mezquita are the most expensive and least interesting — walk 10 minutes for better value.
  • Medina Azahara is 5 km out with limited shade and a shuttle from the car park; go early and book the bus or taxi.

Córdoba is a low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets in the Mezquita queues and around the Roman Bridge, summer heat, and uneven old-town lanes at night. Keep bags zipped in crowds and drink water in Jul–Aug.
