Córdoba

Give Córdoba 2 nights: one for the Jesuit block and cathedral, one for Güemes and the Sierras. Skip it only if you have under 48 h and no interest in colonial streets.

Argentina's second city and its biggest student town: about 200,000 students keep the centro, Nueva Córdoba and Güemes busy late into the night. The UNESCO Jesuit block and the cathedral anchor the historic centre, and the Sierras de Córdoba start within an hour of the bus terminal. It is a working city, not a resort, so plan around neighbourhoods rather than a single sight.

Get around

Buses only since the trams went: you need a Red Bus card (buy at kiosks with the Red Bus sign, the bus terminal or the airport) — drivers rarely take cash. Corridors are colour-coded and line numbers combine corridor and route, e.g. 40 or 51. Yellow taxis and green remises are cheap by US standards; hail taxis on the street, order remises by phone. The centre is walkable, and cycling works on the few maintained avenues and the Suquía river path.

Sleep

Nueva Córdoba
South of the centre, next to the university; the most convenient base for first-timers, walkable to the Jesuit block and full of cafés and bars.
Centro / microcentro
Around Plaza San Martín and the pedestrian malls; best if you want the cathedral, Cabildo and tourist office on your doorstep.
Güemes
Old protected quarter with a 19th-century feel, street life and weekend markets; 15–20 min walk south of the centre.
Cerro de las Rosas / Alta Córdoba
Residential and nightlife pockets further out; only worth it if you have a specific reason or a car.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: One cheek kiss among friends; handshake in business; avoid: Refusing a kiss from a new acquaintance's friends

Scams and watch-outs

  • Buy the Red Bus card before you board; old bus coins are no longer accepted and drivers often refuse pesos.
  • Some cycleways pass through high-crime neighbourhoods and are poorly maintained — stick to the river path and central avenues.
  • Summer rain (Nov–Mar) floods streets fast because drainage is poor; keep bags off the pavement.
  • The bus terminal is about 700 m long with two buildings (T1 long-distance, T2 local) joined by a tunnel — arrive early to find your gate.
  • Bicycle theft is common: use a guarded car park, not a street rack.

Central Córdoba is fine by day and busy at night around Nueva Córdoba and Güemes; the real risks are petty theft on crowded buses, poorly lit peripheral neighbourhoods and the outer cycleways. Use radio taxis or remises after dark and keep your phone out of sight on the street.
