Copenhagen in April: what to expect

April is the month Copenhagen changes gear. Average highs climb from about 8 °C at the start to 13 °C by the end, with lows near 2–5 °C; the harbour and the Øresund keep the city a degree or two cooler than inland Zealand. The wind is the part visitors underestimate — a 5 °C afternoon on the harbour front feels like 0 °C, so a windproof outer layer matters more than a thick one.

Rain falls on roughly 12–14 days of the month, usually as short showers rather than all-day rain, and April is one of the drier months of the Danish year. Sun hours are still modest, around 5–6 a day, but daylight jumps from about 13 hours on 1 April to nearly 15 by 30 April, which is why evenings outdoors start to work again.

The sea is around 6–8 °C — too cold for swimming, fine for a harbour ferry ride.

April sits in the shoulder: noticeably busier than January and February, clearly calmer than June to August. Weekdays are quiet enough to walk into most museums and restaurants without booking; weekends and the Easter break fill up, and hotel rates jump for those dates.

Hotel prices run below the summer peak but above winter. Hostel beds and mid-range rooms are the best value; the cheapest rooms disappear first around Easter and the last weekend of the month, when Danes take short breaks. Flights from the US and UK are usually cheaper than in July, though school-holiday weeks are the exception.

Museums, Tivoli and canal boats are less queue-prone than in summer, which is the main practical gain of coming now.

The month's anchor is Tivoli Gardens opening for the summer season, usually in early to mid April — check the exact date each year, as it moves. The gardens then stay open into late September.

Cherry blossom along the Bispebjerg cemetery avenue and in a few city parks is a short, unpredictable window, typically mid to late April; locals watch for it and it can be over in a week. Easter itself (25–29 March 2027) falls mostly in late March, so in 2027 the closures and busy travel days land just before April starts — check the year you travel.

Also worth checking: the Queen's birthday flag-raising at Amalienborg on 16 April, and the start of the outdoor season at the city's harbour baths and street-food markets.

April suits the city itself. Cycle the harbour and bridge routes, walk Nyhavn and Christianshavn, and use the metro and harbour bus when the wind wins. Indoor anchors — the National Museum, SMK, Louisiana (a short train ride north) and the Round Tower — are ideal for the showery days.

Day trips work well now: Roskilde for the cathedral and Viking Ship Museum, Helsingør for Kronborg, and Malmö across the Øresund by train. Beaches and the harbour baths are for looking at, not swimming.

If you want warmer weather and longer evenings, May is the better month; if you want the cheapest beds and don't mind grey, February wins.

Pack for three seasons in one day: a waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, a light scarf or buff, and shoes that handle wet cobbles. Gloves and a hat are still useful in early April, especially on the water.

Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for the bright, low-angle sun, and a small umbrella or a packable rain jacket rather than a heavy one. A refillable bottle works well — Copenhagen tap water is drinkable.

March is colder, darker and cheaper, with Easter closures in late March 2027. May is warmer, greener and busier, with long light evenings and the Ascension and Whit long weekends filling trains. June is the start of the high season: 17 hours of light, harbour swimming and higher prices.

If your dates are flexible, late April and May give the best balance of light, weather and manageable crowds.
