Copenhagen is a bike-and-daylight city: sights close together, expensive meals, and short winter days; plan the outdoors for midday and eat at the food halls rather than sit-down dinners.

Copenhagen is flat, small and costly. The trips that go wrong walk in cycle lanes, book sit-down dinners at every meal, or arrive in December without daylight. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Roskilde, Helsingør and Malmö are day trips from one kept bed.

Two glass halls of food stalls beside Nørreport: go for a late lunch or an early dinner and eat standing or at the shared tables; stalls keep their own hours.

First-timers: a hotel around Strøget and the Latin Quarter, flat and central, ten minutes on foot from the palace and the castle garden.
Vesterbro & Central Station
Hotels near the station: the metro and trains at the door, cheaper beds and flat streets; a 10-minute walk to Tivoli and Strøget.

Language

Danish is hard to pronounce and easy to skip: almost everyone under 70 speaks fluent English, and signs at stations and airports are bilingual. A 'tak' (thanks) and 'hej' (hi) are appreciated; anything more is a bonus.

  • Swedes and Norwegians can read Danish; spoken Danish is harder for them than the other way round.
  • German is widely understood in southern Jutland.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Firm handshake and eye contact; first names at once; avoid: Titles and small talk that goes on too long
  • Punctuality: Arrive on time for meetings and dinners; avoid: Being 15 minutes late without a message
  • Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or wine; say 'tak for mad' after the meal; avoid: Leaving right after eating
  • Conversation: Dry humour, directness and self-deprecation; avoid: Boasting — Janteloven frowns on it
  • Queues: Take a number (kølapper) where there is a machine; avoid: Pushing to the counter
  • Cycling: Signal stops and turns with your hand; keep right; avoid: Riding side by side in busy lanes
  • Toasts: 'Skål' with eye contact before and after drinking; avoid: Looking away mid-toast

  • Do not stand in cycle lanes.
  • Do not swim in the harbour outside marked baths.

  • Tourist-trap menus: Eat one street back; check the price per smørrebrød piece before ordering.
  • Fake EES or ETIAS 'registration' sites: EES is free at the border; ETIAS only on travel-europe.europa.eu once live.
  • Pickpocket teams: Zip bags on trains; phones out of back pockets.
  • Currency conversion at the till: Always pay in DKK, never in your home currency.
  • Unlicensed taxis: Use marked taxis with a roof light, or order through an app.
  • Street cannabis sales: Illegal, often mixed with other drugs, and the area has seen shootings; walk past.
