Best tours in Copenhagen: walking, food and day tours

Copenhagen rewards walking. The old city, the harbour and Christianshavn are compact, flat and easy to read on foot, so a single guided walk at the start of your trip does more for you than three separate tours. After that, pick by interest: food, design, harbour, or a castle day trip by train.

For most first-time visitors the best combination is one orientation walk, one boat hour, and one self-guided train day trip. Add a food tour only if eating is a main reason for the trip.

Walking tours generally run a morning departure and one or two in the afternoon; tip-based walks start from the City Hall Square area and you tip at the end, commonly 50–100 DKK per person (check). Paid small-group walks cost more and cap numbers.

Boat tours run longer hours in summer than in winter and the classic route covers the harbour, Christianshavn canals and the Little Mermaid from the water (check). Food tours usually run one or two departures a day, often at lunch and late afternoon, and last three to four hours with stops in the old city, Torvehallerne or Vesterbro (check).

Museum and castle tours follow the attraction's own opening hours, so check the day you plan to go, especially outside May–September.

Most walking and food tours meet near City Hall Square, Kongens Nytorv or the Central Station, all reachable by metro or S-train (check). The airport sits on the metro line into the centre, so a same-day tour is possible if your flight lands early (check).

For day trips, buy a ticket at the station machine or in the DSB app. Roskilde and Helsingør are both short train rides from Copenhagen Central, and both stations sit within a short walk of the main sights, so a guided coach adds little (check).

If you are coming from outside Europe, an overnight US departure usually lands in the morning, which leaves the afternoon free for a tour (check).

Book food tours and anything in December or peak July–August ahead of time; for walking tours, same-day is usually fine (check). Check whether a tour includes entry fees; many castle and museum tours do not, so you pay twice.

Guides are almost always fluent in English, and tipping is not expected on fixed-price tours. On tip-based walks, cash is easiest but card readers are common (check). Wear shoes you can walk in for three hours; cobbles and harbour paths are hard on thin soles.
