Copenhagen airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH) sits about 8 km from the centre, so every option is short. The metro and the train both leave from the station inside the terminal and cost the same zone fare; the metro is more frequent and runs all night, while the train is better if you are heading to Central Station or beyond. Taxis are metered and quick outside rush hour. Buses are the slowest and rarely worth it unless you are staying along their route.

The metro station is inside the terminal, under Terminal 3, and M2 runs direct to Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport in the centre. Trains are frequent in the day and the metro keeps running through the night, which makes it the default for late arrivals. Buy a ticket from the machines or the app before you board; there are no gates at every entrance but inspectors do check.

The train from the same station stops at Copenhagen Central and continues over the Øresund bridge to Malmö. If your hotel is near Central Station, the train is the easier choice; for the old town and Nyhavn, the metro drops you closer. Both are covered by the same zone ticket, and a bike can be taken on the train but not on the metro.

Taxis wait outside the terminals and are metered, with card payment normal. Expect about DKK 250–400 to the centre and 20–30 minutes outside rush hour; the bridge and tunnel route is quick but can slow at peak times. Use the official rank rather than anyone approaching you inside the hall.

Local buses also serve the airport and cost the same zone fare, but they take 30–45 minutes and are only sensible if your accommodation sits on the route. For most visitors the metro or train wins on both time and simplicity.

Public transport in Copenhagen is priced by zones, not by distance travelled, so the airport to the centre is a short, cheap trip. Exact fares change; check the current price at the machine or in the app. Taxis are the one big cost, and the difference between a taxi and the metro is the price of a meal.

If you plan several trips in a day, a 24-hour or multi-zone pass can be better value than single tickets. Contactless bank cards work on the system in many cases, but confirm before you rely on it.

Allow extra time on weekday mornings and late afternoons, when both the metro and the roads are busiest. If you arrive after midnight, the metro is the reliable option; taxis are available but fewer. Keep your ticket until you leave the last station, as checks happen on the platform as well as on board.

For a smooth arrival, know your hotel's nearest station before you land: Nørreport and Kongens Nytorv for the old town, Central Station for the Vesterbro side. That one detail decides whether the metro or the train is your better pick.
