Cootamundra
Stop for one night if you are driving the Hume or on the Sydney–Melbourne train; the town is done in half a day.
Cootamundra is a small Riverina town on the Sydney–Melbourne rail line and the Olympic Highway, about 350 km southwest of Sydney. It is known as the birthplace of Sir Donald Bradman and for the Cootamundra wattle that blooms in July and August. There is no regular passenger airport; you arrive by car, train or coach.

Get around
The town is flat and small enough to walk: the station, main street and Cricket Captains Walk are within about 15 minutes on foot. A car helps for the wattle, Stockinbingal and the surrounding farms; there is no local bus network worth planning around.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days can pass 35 °C; carry water and avoid midday walking.
- Trains are infrequent: two NSW TrainLink services each way daily on the Melbourne–Sydney line, plus a weekly Sydney–Griffith service. Book seats ahead.
- The airport has no scheduled flights; do not plan to fly in.
- Fuel and food options thin out after about 20:00; eat before then.
A quiet rural town; the main risks are heat in summer, wildlife and trucks on the highways at dawn and dusk, and long gaps between fuel stops.
