Cooroy
Give Cooroy half a day as a Noosa Hinterland stop: the butter factory, the kiln and a Mount Cooroy walk. Sleep in Noosa, not here.
Cooroy is a small hinterland town on the Bruce Highway and the Queensland Rail north coast line, about 30 minutes inland from Noosa. Its draw is a compact heritage main street, a 1915 butter factory turned arts centre, a heritage kiln and bush walks up Mount Cooroy. Most travellers pass through on the way to Noosa or the Sunshine Coast; a half day covers it, and Noosa or Pomona makes a better bed base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Bush walks: carry water, wear covered shoes and check for ticks and snakes in warm months.
- Mount Cooroy is a steep, unformed track: not for flip-flops or wet weather.
- The Bruce Highway (M1) exit is 230; missing it costs you 15+ minutes each way.
- Small-town hours: many shops close by mid-afternoon and on Sundays.
Very safe for a small town. The real risks are heat on bush walks, unsealed tracks after rain and wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk.
