Coolamon
Give Coolamon half a day, not a night: the Up-To-Date Store and Fire Museum take 2–3 h, and the town is 40 min by car from Wagga Wagga.
Coolamon is a small Riverina town of about 2,200 people, built around its railway station and the Canola Way between Junee and Narrandera. Two small museums, a handful of cafés and a motel make it a half-day stop on a Riverina drive rather than a destination in its own right; the train runs only twice a week in each direction, so most visitors arrive by car.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains are rare: the Griffith XPL calls at Coolamon only twice a week in each direction, and bookings must be made in advance.
- Cafés close on Sundays and some shut by early afternoon; plan lunch before 2PM.
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and avoid the middle of the day.
- Fuel and groceries are limited: fill up in Wagga Wagga, Junee or Narrandera.
- Kangaroos and livestock on the Canola Way at dawn and dusk.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are heat in summer, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and long gaps between services if you run out of fuel or water.
