Coolah
Give Coolah one night, two if you walk Coolah Tops: it is a small town with a national park 40 km east, not a base for the Central West.
Coolah sits on the Black Stump Way between Dubbo and Tamworth, at the foot of the Coolah Tops range. The town itself is a pub, a bakery and a gallery; the reason to come is Coolah Tops National Park, a plateau of snow gums, grass trees and waterfalls about 40 km east on a partly unsealed road. Without a car there is no practical way in.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel or supplies beyond the town: fill up and buy food before you head to the park.
- The road into Coolah Tops is partly unsealed and can be rough or closed after rain: check with Warrumbungle Shire Council before driving.
- Summer days pass 35 °C and the park has little shade on the plateau tracks.
- Mobile coverage drops out on the park road and inside the park.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are the drive to Coolah Tops, summer heat and no mobile signal in the park. Tell someone your plan before you go in.
