Condobolin
Give Condobolin one night, two at most: the painted utes, the lake and the museums fill a day, and the town is a stop on the way west, not a destination.
Condobolin sits on the Lachlan River in the middle of New South Wales, a wheat and wool town of about 3,500 people that calls itself the Heart of NSW. There is no commercial airport and no local bus, so you arrive by car or by the weekly NSW TrainLink train and coach services. One full day covers the sights; the lake and the free camping keep people longer in the warmer months.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and mobile coverage thins outside town: fill the tank in Condobolin or Parkes before heading west.
- Summer days regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and drive early.
- Some museums open only by appointment: phone ahead before you build a day around them.
- Kangaroos and emus on the roads at dawn and dusk.
A quiet inland town with low street crime; the real risks are heat, long drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk.
